The place where nearly 130,000 rare specimens are recording the life experiences of the Earth, where the fantastic living world is explored through profound academic researches, and where the stories of human and nature are told in lively exhibitions, this is Zhejiang Museum of Natural History at Westlake Cultural Square in Hangzhou, China.
A large presentation wall of living beings will first welcome you. Specimens like Traumatocrinus sp., buried wood of a thousand year old, Eschrichtius robustus, Rhincodon typus is recounting the mysteries and magnificence of the life silently and is also reminding you of a journey into nature and life.
The Life Story of the Earth describes the Earth’s life experience of 4.6 billion years long, which is a hard but splendid history of explosions and extinctions. The processes such as cosmic explosion, formation of the solar system and the birth of the Earth provide an essential platform for the origin and evolution of the life.
In the early Cambrian 0.53 billion years ago, the first life explosion on the earth took place, and the ancestors of various organisms in the ocean came into being.
Life ascended to land in an evolution of over a hundred million years.
At the end of Permian about 250 million years ago, most biological groups died out in the dramatic changes of the Earth’s environment.
Biological extinctions gave way to the new life forms. During the Triassic, the number of reptiles was growing ever bigger and they played a dominant role on Earth in their special way.
Dinosaurs, rulers in the Mesozoic, came to their prosperity then.
However, the brilliant Dinosaur Time met its doom due to a catastrophe at the end of Cretaceous 65 million years ago.
Life kept evolving dynamically in extinctions and explosions. Mammals dominated the earth and human beings finally came to the stage in the Cenozoic. When ape men walked out of the jungle, a species with new understanding of the life appeared. From then on, a new page of the Earth’s life story opened.
With the explosions and extinctions of the life as a clue, Zhejiang Museum of Natural History shows the hardships and twists in the life evolution, motivating everyone to cherish and love life more. To meet various needs of visitors, the Museum first adopts the concept of Dual Structures, i.e. a combination of the reconstruction of original scenes and elaborate exhibitions. In a journey across time and space, visitors can have a close look at the fossil specimens in the exhibition to get the evidence of life evolutions deeply.
A panorama of living things on Earth shows itself through a long evolution. .
Life is marvelous, for different organisms have evolved to the forms and abilities adaptive to their living environments. There are unique and diversified ecosystems under distinctive geographical conditions such as Polar Regions, deserts, wetlands, oceans and tropical rainforests.
This is a splendid collection where representatives of all kinds of species assemble in a 3-D encyclopedia of life.
